What are dentures?
Dentures are removable appliances for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back into your mouth. It can take you some time to get used to them, and will never feel like your previous teeth did, but modern dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever.
There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. Your dentist at Aussie Smile Dentist in Mosman will help you choose the type of denture that is best for you based on whether some or all of your teeth are going to be replaced and the cost involved.
When you lose all of your teeth, facial muscles can sag, making you look older. Dentures can help by filling out the appearance of your face and profile. They can be made to closely resemble your natural teeth so that your appearance does not change much. Dentures will definitely improve the look of your smile and that's what we can certainly help you achieve!
Full and Parcial dentures:
A traditional full denture is made and placed after the rest of the teeth are removed and tissues have healed, which can take several months. Your dentist at Aussie Smile Dentist will take measurements and make models of the your jaws during a preliminary appointment. This way, you do not have to be without teeth during the healing period!
If some of your teeth are healthy, at Aussie Smile Dentist in Mosman, we can help you use partial dentures instead of full dentures. Partial dentures rest on a metal framework that attaches to your natural teeth. Many times crowns are set on some of your natural teeth and serve as anchors for the denture. You can think of partial dentures as a removable alternative to bridges!
After you get your dentures…
Whether full or partial, dentures may feel a bit strange in the beginning, but you will soon get used to wearing them. At first, you may need to wear your dentures at all times, even while sleeping. Your dentist at Aussie Smile Dentistry will advise you on whether you should remove your dentures before you go to sleep or not.
By removing your dentures at night, you will allow your gums to rest as you sleep. If you remove your dentures, they should be kept moist. This will stop the denture material from drying out and changing shape. It is important that you clean your dentures as often as you would clean you normal teeth (at least twice a day).
If you have any questions about dentures, please do not hesitate to ask your dentist next time you visit us at Aussie Smile Dentist!
